Upside Down Berry Pie

9-inch pastry for single crust pie
2 egg whites
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1/4 cup sugar
3 cup fresh strawberries
1/2 cup sugar
3 tbsp. corn starch
Whipping cream or Cool Whip

Bake and cool pie crust. For meringue, beat egg whites, vanilla, cream of tartar and 1/4 cup sugar until soft peaks form. Spread on bottom and sides of pastry. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool. Mash berries; add water to measure 2 cups; combine 1/2 cup sugar and corn starch. Add to mashed berries. Cook and stir until bubbly; cook and stir 2 minutes more; cool. Spread over meringue; chill. Top with shipped cream; garnish with strawberry slices. Cover and chill to store.

Bake in preheated 250F oven for 2-1/2 hours. When done remove from oven and immediately pour over it a mixture of the following:
2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup orange juice
2 tsp. orange rind

Punch holes in warm cake with ice pick. Let cool and remove from pan.

Serves 15 and freezes well
