Apple Cake 3

1 box white or yellow cake mix, mixed as directed on box
3 apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2/3 cup water, divided
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 tablespoon margarine, melted
Cool Whip

Preheat oven to 375F. Pour cake mix into prepared bundt pan. Simmer apples, sugar, cinnamon and 1/3 cup water until apples are tender. Remove from heat. Place apples on cake batter in pan. Pour juice from apples onto batter. Bake 45 minutes. Cool on wire rack, remove from pan. Mix powdered sugar and margarine, stirring until smooth. Add 1/3 cup water. Boil 10 minutes; syrup will form. Spread syrup on top and down sides of cooled cake. May substitute peaches for apples. Serve hot or cold with Cool Whip.
