Taste of Autumn

3 cups flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped finely (optional)
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/8 cup milk
1 cup confectioners sugar

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease well and flour tube pan. Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Set aside. In large mixing bowl, at medium speed, beat butter with sugar until very light. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until very light and fluffy at low speed. Beat in flour mixture (in fourths) alternating with buttermilk (in thirds) beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat only until ingredients are combined. Pour nuts into bottom of pan at this time. Add batter to prepared pan. Bake 60-65 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 15 minutes. Turn cake out on rack to finish cooling.

Stir butter and sugar in sauce pan over medium heat until sugar melts. Slowly add milk. Remove from heat, add confectioners sugar 1/2 cup at a time until spreading consistency. Drizzle over cooled cake.
